De acordo com especialistas em segurança consultados pela BBC, apps de previsão do tempo estão minerando dados de usuários sem permissão e facilitando fraudes. Um deles, o “Weather Forecast—World Weather Accurate Radar”, já foi baixado mais de 10 milhões de vezes na Play Store e é acusado de inscrever usuários em serviços pagos sem suas autorizações.
Esse app em específico é desenvolvido pela chinesa TCL, que é dona das marcas de smartphone Alcatel e BlackBerry. A empresa inclusive embarca esse software de fábrica em dispositivos dessas marcas.
Segundo a Upstream Systems, especializada em segurança mobile, o app da TCL solicita informações em excesso do usuário, caracterizando mineração de dados pessoais. Para usar o app, não só é preciso fornecer sua localização em tempo real, mas também entregar endereços de email e números de IMEI do seu smartphone.The security company says that in Brazil alone, more than 2.5 million suspicious transaction attempts were made between July and August 2018 through Alcatel smartphones using the said TCL app here. Once discovered, the schema was blocked. Outside Brazil, owners of Alcatel handsets in Malaysia and Nigeria were also victims.
Several other weather apps have also been caught up in similar practices. In December, Google removed two Chinese weather apps from the Play Store because of excessive user data collection.

In the US, the Weather Channel, the most popular weather forecasting app there, with more than 100 million installs on Android and iOS devices, has been accused of also mining user data and making commercial use of it without ever requesting authorization.
The company is now being sued by the Los Angeles Public Prosecutor's Office. This company is owned by IBM. TecMundo
